BARCELONA- THAT EVENING
âIâm taking the rest of the week off. Thereâs an emergency back home, and I need to catch the next flight to New York,â I donât ask, but I state emphatically before grabbing my gym bag and marching towards the door. Athenaâs gone too far---she stepped over the line and backed me into a corner. The time has come to show my cards and drag her cheating ass home.
I shudder as I walk, picturing that damn photo in my mind- his arm on her waist and smiles spread across both their faces. The caption posted by someone calling themselves NumberSwiftOneFan, read: Love is in the air. Love is in the freaking air? What did this person see that made them so confident posting something like that?
Iâm going to kill that girl. No, Iâll beat Wade senseless in front of her to teach her a lesson. I clench my fists and babble nonsense, grinding my teeth until the pain in my jaw reminds me that someoneâs screaming at me from behind. âDash! Hold on! You canât leave. We play...Madrid...Fri...â Coach Moreno sprints with his clipboard in his hand, too winded to finish his sentence. He slides between me and the driverâs side door and holds his arms out---blocking me from lifting the latch.
I place my hands on his shoulders and move him to one side. I donât have time for this. Every minute that flies by is another sixty seconds that Wade could be sexing up my woman. âCoach, Iâll be back by Thursday night. And if Iâm not, fuck it. Use that idiot, Alberto. You obviously brought him here to upstage me. If he thinks heâs ready, let that little shit show you what heâs got.â I climb into the driverâs seat and turn on the ignition.
He throws himself on my hood and bangs his fists on the steel. âI didnât hire him. The owners brought him in when you announced youâd retire next year. How can you leave me?â His red face and weepy eyes break my heart. Heâs always been a great coach, but my time is near. I wonât be one of those athletes who keep playing long after his prime has come and gone.
âCoach, get a hold of yourself. I said Iâd be back for the game. This is important. It could be the most important trip Iâve ever taken. The team will be fine without me.â I lie through my teeth but hope itâs true. My lucky streak hasnât been broken in over four years. If I play, we win. Like I said, when I want something, I pull out all the stops. And I like to win.
A knot in the pit of my stomach coils deeper into my gut. Why didnât I pull out all the stops for Athena? I hid like a coward, stalked her from the shadows then let her set the rules for our relationship. Thatâs not me. I donât sit on the sidelines and let shit happen to me.
